in the united states. our correspondent who was in japan for cnn for years and years now living in the united states covering newtown, listen to what she had to say about the comparison between those two places. >> i moved back to the u.s. this summer for the last five years, i was living in japan as cnn's tokyo correspondent. in that entire time, i never covered a shooting. there aren't any. this is my third mass shooting i've covered in just six months. i don't have the answer but i can compare japan and the u.s. in japan, there are almost no guns. the average person just can't get one. and i have to tell you, it's the safest place i've ever lived. >> and yet, we can talk about a place that you covered as a journalist, the an toyate killings in norway, 2011, summer camp. 77 people killed most youngsters and norway is a country where it is tough to get a gun. so you can't stop this completely. but people will say if you reduce the number of guns, you'll have fewer of them. here's the thing. this is a country where i can say whatever i want. i can worship any way i want and according to the w

no emotion whatsoever. i -- i don't know how to feel. >> reporter: at schools across the united states, those feelings of sorrow turned into anxie anxiety. 20 miles from newtown, a suspicious person at a train station triggered a lockdown of all schools. for some teachers including chris mcallister in arlington, texas, the lockdowns were self-imposed. >> that door closes, i know it's locked. i don't even have to second guess. i put a little piece of paper on my window that normally i would keep it to the side. >> reporter: sandy hook elementary school remains closed. crews are renovating an old school nearby. it will be ready whenever the students are. >> as a mom, i know i could never send my kids back to that school. >> reporter: julie pokrinchak's daughter olivia was one of the 6-year-old victims. she was looking forward to watching olivia, who loved musical theater, play an angel in a church play saturday. instead, olivia's funeral will be held at the same church, and then she'll be buried on friday. >> i'm hoping that other towns are going to open up their schools and let the kids go the

, as it gets to work. ♪ cisco. tomorrow starts here. >>> throughout newtown, connecticut, teddy bears, the candles, pictures of christmas trees, they were displayed everywhere in remembrance of the victims who lost their lives in the shooting massacre at sandy hook elementary. the community united during the holiday to support the families of the victims who are grieving. 20 children, 7 adults killed on december 14th. the memorials remembering them are here to stay, we have learned. an official announced a special plan by the city to convert the memorial, here is part of what this city official told residents. the thousands of flowers, letters and prayers, the signs and photos, teddy bears and more will be gathered and processed into soil that will serve in the foundation of a future permanent memorial to honor the slain children and adults. officials say it will be a sacred memorial. the items will be collected and converted starting this week. >>> now, new information on that tragic shooting in upstate new york on christmas eve. two firefighters were shot and killed. two others were
